How much should you pay for your move?Moving rates can vary considerably depending on the kind of moving service you require. Moving can be residential, commercial, long distance or local in nature. Local Residential Moving ratesIf you are moving locally, their are two basic rates structure, by the hour or flat rate. By the hour is recommended if you have nice and valuable belongings. Flat rate is OK for inexpensive goods where the damage might not be a concern. The reason for this is that the movers get paid by the hour on an hourly move and by the job on a flat rate move. They will tend to be more careful when paid by the hour because they can take their time, on a flat rate move they are encouraged by the company to work faster and also gain more as an added bonus. The drawback is that they sometimes hurry up and get a little negligent resulting in the occasional damages. By the hour rates vary between $50-$100 for 2 man and a truck, expect to pay about 30% more per extra men. Flat rate moves are negotiable but usually loosely based on the company's average hourly rates and estimated move duration.
